The revenue model section is not a declaration of how you intend to make money. Reviewers are looking for a structure that lets them verify whether the revenue can actually materialize. One of the rejection patterns documented by InnoForest is: 'the revenue structure is unclear, making it impossible to see how the business actually earns money.'
Business feasibility analysis requires three components in the revenue model section: pricing structure (the rationale for choosing between one-time, subscription, success-based, or bundled), unit economics (ARPU, LTV, variable cost structure), and a pricing anchor (comparison against agencies, in-house staffing, or alternative tools). A one-line revenue model satisfies none of these.
Economic analysis requirements go even further. They call for separate line items covering revenue sources with unit price and volume assumptions, repurchase, upsell, and cross-sell ratios, and unit economics (ARPU, margin, LTV). The statement 'we operate on a subscription model' satisfies none of these.

The five patterns below are not writing problems — they are symptoms of missing structural information needed for the revenue model to actually function. If Pattern ① is not resolved, the subsequent patterns cannot be validated in sequence.
| Pattern | Missing Information | Signal Reviewers Receive |
|---|---|---|
| ① Unclear payment unit | Per-transaction amount, billing basis (seats, usage, transactions, etc.) | Without a price, the revenue formula cannot be constructed at all |
| ② Purchase frequency not stated | Monthly/annual repurchase rate, assumed churn rate | LTV cannot be calculated, so the justification for customer acquisition cost cannot be verified |
| ③ Channel margin omitted | Partner/distribution commission rates, net margin | Appears to either conceal or be unaware of the gap between gross revenue and net margin |
| ④ No pricing rationale | Competitor price ranges, evidence of customer willingness to pay | The price reads as a number pulled from the founder's expectations, not the market |
| ⑤ Unit economics missing | ARPU, variable costs, break-even customer count | No way to back-calculate whether the revenue target is achievable |

A one-line revenue model cascades through the entire feasibility analysis. Without a payment unit, you cannot build a revenue formula; without a revenue formula, the funding plan and break-even point become disconnected. The criticism that 'a revenue target with no basis proves there is no plan at all' is most visible when this chain reaction spreads across the entire business plan.
Revenue projections only mean something when the service market is defined and specific calculations are shown. Defining a market size and claiming 'capturing just 1% gets us to $X million' is unverifiable without payment unit and purchase frequency.
The reason reviewers stop at the revenue model section is that even after reading through subsequent sections, they cannot trace the path by which revenue actually materializes. When the revenue plan is disconnected from the revenue model, both the funding plan and growth strategy read as isolated pieces.

The goal of rewriting is not to explain your billing method but to make the path through which revenue actually materializes traceable within the plan. Focusing on a single revenue model makes it easier to fill in all five items below. Writing 'all three — ads, commissions, and subscriptions' disperses your word count before you can populate the numbers for each.
- Payment unit: Instead of 'subscription,' specify the per-transaction amount and billing basis — e.g., '$XX/seat/month, minimum 3 seats.' For one-time commissions, include the average transaction value and commission rate.
- Purchase frequency: State the annual contract renewal rate and assumed monthly churn as numbers. Add a one-line source — whether customer interviews or publicly available competitor data.
- Channel margin: If the App Store, a distribution partner, or a reseller is involved, separate the fee rate from the net margin. For direct sales, tie it to the customer acquisition cost for that channel.
- Pricing rationale: Summarize your positioning against alternatives (agency fees, in-house hiring costs, existing tool pricing) in one sentence. 'Reasonably priced' is not a rationale.
- Unit economics: Express ARPU and LTV per customer in a form that can be calculated. Stating the customer count needed to break even automatically links to the investment requirement and its timing.

The fastest way to check whether your revenue model section reads as a 'design' is to see whether you can immediately state a number for each of the five items below.
- You can state in numbers what a single customer pays per transaction
- You have an assumption and rationale for how many times that customer pays per year
- You have calculated the net margin after distribution and partner fees
- You can explain in one sentence why this price is higher or lower than the alternatives
- You can back-calculate the customer count needed to break even
If there is any item you cannot immediately answer with a number, that item is a gap in your plan. The reason a one-line revenue model gets marked down is that it cannot fill all five of these items.
